An update on how incorporated societies are progressing with the process of transitioning to the Incorporated Societies Act 2022, including an overview of what incorporated societies need to do in order to reregister, alternative options should they choose not to reregister, and why “doing nothing” before the 5 April 2026 deadline is not an option. The webinar will also provide an overview of the financial reporting rules that may be new for incorporated societies that are not registered charities.
The webinar will also look at related developments such as the proposed Member’s Bill (the Incorporated Societies (Small Societies) Amendment Bill), developments relating to the Statutes Amendment Bill 80-2, the Companies Office proposed new fees for incorporated societies, and an update on IRD’s proposal to treat membership and subscription fees as taxable.
It is intended to give both a theoretical overview as well as sufficient detail to be practical. Practitioners from both small and large firms should attend.

Sue Barker, Director, Sue Barker Charities Law
Sue Barker is the director of Sue Barker Charities Law, a boutique law firm based in Wellington, New Zealand specialising in charities law and public tax law. Sue is the author of Taxation of Charities in Aotearoa New Zealand(LexisNexis, 2025) and a contributor to a number ofother charities law publications, including The Law and Practice of Charities in Aotearoa New Zealand2ed (LexisNexis, 2024). Sue is a director of the Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand and is recognised internationally as a Charity Law Scholar. In 2019, Sue was awarded the New Zealand Law Foundation International Research Fellowship TeKarahipiRangahau ā Taiao, New Zealand’s premier legal research award, to undertake research into the question “What does a world-leading framework of charities law look like?”. The final report from the Fellowship, entitled Focus on purpose, was released in April 2022 making 70 recommendations for charities law reform in Aotearoa New Zealand.
